How’s your work/life balance?

PSX_20160311_144309I was asked recently to create an article around the work/life balance theory. A topic I know a lot about … a topic I LOVE!

After writing this article [which can be found at HatchedDesigns.com.au] I really started to dissect the question of what is a good work/life balance? Over the last few years I have read countless articles on it. I have seen people and corporations build businesses and reap profit from this very popular question that seems to be causing a great deal of people, a great deal of stress.

What I want to say with this blog, right now, is … Finding a good work/life balance isn’t difficult. It is certainly not something people need to add to their stress bucket. If you find your life a little ho-hum, a little more stressed than you would like, or not heading in a direction that fills you with at least some element of excitement or simple joy, you need to stop thinking about the things you loathe and start thinking about the things you love.

Take the time to simply sit down with a pen and paper and identify things that you love.

Now, do you have enough of this ‘thing you love’ in your life?

Are your hours devoted to ‘work’ and what you ‘love’ equal?

How can you bring more of what you love into your life?

For me, it is writing and time with my family. It took me 5 years to get here, however, my employment surrounds writing from home. Getting myself to this position wasn’t easy, but, it was worth it. My children don’t need daycare or before and after School care. They are lucky enough to have their mummy at home. My family was/is my priority and writing is at the top of the list of all things I love about life, therefore I know my work/life is in balance.

Knowing you have a healthy work/life balance comes down to how you feel about it? Does it feel balanced to you? Are you happy? If not, then what can you do at this very moment to change that… What is it that you love to do?

Feel free to start a discussion below. I would love to know how you created a work/life balance you enjoy.

Design Inspo…

I am always looking for inspiration and new ideas for magazine layout and production. I love how magazines appear to have done a back-flip once those dirty words were uttered, “print is dead”. Layouts have back pedaled some 30 years in appearance and are looking trendier than ever.

Print will never die because there will always be old fashioned lunatics like me out there waiting for the next niche publication to hit the news stand.

Loving the Vintage inspo…

#loveyourwork – No seriously … LOVE IT!

A very colourful brochure job for Suicide Risk Assessment Aust.

Outside of putting together an insanely cool issue of I AM magazine every quarter, I also dabble in a little graphic design work and content/freelance writing for other sites. I absolutely LOVE what I do! Every aspect of every job I receive, from the initial sourcing of ideas to the transformation of a customers vision into a finished graphic, file or story. When you work in the creative industry you are exercising, stretching and exploring some of the most beautiful parts of your brain. You are giving your imagination permission to step outside and show you exactly what it can do.

How many jobs or bosses allow you to do that?!!!

Love your work! Whatever it is you decide to fill your days with, do everything you can to love, at a minimum, 80% of your jobs requirement.

Otherwise, what’s the point?

Here’s an idea…and it’s not rocket science.

passion program black bg copy
About 12 months ago I created the Passion Program.

The reason I decided to put this little project together was because of my own situation and the situation many of my friends were faced with. I am a single mum and a lot of my friends are also. As most single mums know, the Australian Government brought in a policy a few years ago that would see single mums forced back into the work force once their child turned 6. Now, regardless of what you might read in the media, or hear from the mouths of people who have no idea what it is like to be a single mum and the circumstances that caused their single mum predicament, the majority of single mums want nothing more than a good paying job and to ‘get off’ Government benefits.

The problem faced by single mums seeking jobs is simple, there is no current industry supporting single mum employment, and if there is, the industry only covers about 2% of the single mum population seeking work. That means, a good supply of jobs that allow for school hours and the occasional sick child is simply not available. Some people may mock me for saying this, but I know from experience, [some] employers don’t see a single mum as a ‘reliable’ and profitable employee.

Truth is, we [single mums] are highly skilled in many areas. Multi tasking is something we do on a daily basis, as is working under a great deal of stress and pressure. We have an exceptional talent for budgets and making every dollar count. We know how to organise, supervise, manage and delegate, and we know how to get 2-3 different people to different places all at the same time. Frankly if you want a job done ask a mum, any mum, to do it. I guarantee it will get done. We rarely procrastinate about tasks that are required of us, because we don’t have the luxury of time…But, when it comes to what we like to do for ourselves, that’s a different story.

Enter the Passion Program.

The Passion Program is simply a series of questions that encourages the participant to consider and identify the areas they excel in. The reason different people excel in different areas is due to how it connects to them. If a task connects to the persons heart and head, you have one very happy and productive employee or business owner, however, if the task is a requirement that has no authentic heart or head connection to the person, you have an unhappy chappy working for a living that benefits no one. These types of situations are short term and unfortunately, when the Government brought in the new policy of pushing women into jobs that would evidently cut their Government benefits, no consideration was given as to whether the woman would enjoy her position. The only thing this creates is a group of women going into short term employment, which gives a short term solution to the problem.

Now, if we took the time to work out what it was women actually enjoyed doing and then assisted them down that path, we may actually have a solution that is more long term. Women are an extremely powerful group. Give us a job that talks to our heart and head and we’ll give you an unstoppable and limitless capacity for success.

So here’s a question I ask the women who participate in the Passion Program.

‘If you won lotto tomorrow and never had to worry about money or finances again, what would you do to pass your time? We all need purpose in our lives. What activity, hobby or interest would you occupy your time with?’

Monday Motivation – LIVE YOUR LIFE!

“Life is an interesting journey, you never know where it will take you.
Peaks and valleys, twists and turns, you can get the surprise of your life.
Sometimes on the way to where you’re going you might think … this is the worst time of my life.
But you know what?
At the end of the road, if you can get where you wanted to be … you remember whatever doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger and all the adversity was worth it.
On your way to the top you’ll do anything.
But how do you get your life back when you get there?
What you need to do is be thankful for the life you’ve got.
Stop looking at what you haven’t got and start being thankful for what you do have.”

So 2014?… Was it good for you???

When the clock strikes midnight this New Year’s Eve will one of your hopes for 2015 represent a desire to improve your future through health & wellbeing?

Are you happy with what you have achieved this year from a personal perspective?

Are you feeling more fulfilled in life at the close of 2014 than you have felt in previous years?

I believe there comes a time in everybody’s life where the need to look within is essential. Getting things balanced and happy on the inside and making sure, most of all, our heart is happy with the path we are paving, is, in my opinion, paramount to life success.

Embrace Life, Live Life will be holding their final Wellness Community Festival for 2014 at Gymea Tradies. The event, on November 30,  will launch the Festival in the Sutherland Shire and is focused on bringing local practitioners in the Wellness industry together to provide residents and visitors with information about services that can assist them in their health and wellbeing journey.

Festival-goers will have the opportunity to experience a variety of workshops designed to help them refresh and recharge. With artists, musicians and artisans also attending, the festival is sure to be an inspiring and worthwhile event for those wanting to start, or enhance, their path to wellness.

Founder of Embrace Life, Live Life, Deborah Shepherd says, “Our Wellness Community Festivals are specifically designed to work at the local level so that the community attending is meeting with the local practitioners and they can begin a new, long-term relationship.”

HOLY RED NOSE REINDEER … there’s only 5 weeks left til Christmas!!!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas …

5 weeks to go and Santa’s reindeer will be tap-tap-tapping on your roof, followed by the big man’s cherry red sleigh and sacks full of perfect pressies – oh how we lurrrve the sacks of pressies!!!

Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year. It’s a time when we are consumed with an insane desire to make lists of all the wonderful things we want to gift our loved ones. Making ‘the list’ is so much fun… it’s a time to let the imagination run wild! … For at least a week anyway, after this comes a general toning down in order to keep ‘the list’ inline with your ‘real’ 2014 Christmas budget.

I absolutely love shopping locally all year round, but at Christmas time, it just seems that little bit more special. Supporting local business and having access to unique product – no Kmart catalogue required thank you – makes every girl’s list making and gift buying task easier and ultimately more enjoyable.

Living in the Sutherland Shire chances are you are going to be looking for a gift to please at least 1 fitness freak in your Fam or friend circle. Well, have we got something special for you!

POP-UP-SHOP-FACEBOOK

The POP UP fitness-fashionista event will not only provide you with a seriously lust-have gift that will knock her Nike socks off, it will save you some of that Christmas dollar you’ve been frantically pooling for the last few weeks in the lead up to the most expensive time of the year.

Throw the Asics on guys & girls and fight the fit-bitches off that will be crowding this ultimate shopping event.
