So, you say you want a ‘work from home’ job?
If you ask 3 out of 4 members of my household, they will tell you I either don’t work or they are not sure what I do for work. The confusion generally stems from the fact that I am a full time mum, maid and chef. According to most, people who do that simply “do not work”.
Like most work from home mums my career holds very little value against my partners. Daddy goes to work at set hours every day – mummy doesn’t. Daddy sometimes works 6 days a week – mummy doesn’t. Sound familiar? Sadly, I am not surprised.
Errands, housework, school, shopping, cooking – the list goes on and on. These are all tasks handed to the stay at home person … let’s now just totally drop the “work” from that sentence.
How on earth do stay at home working mums manage to contribute to the financial stability of the household, if they do not work? This is a question that has always baffled me. Ask a ‘working’ member of the household and you may, if you are lucky, get a shoulder shrug. The truth is, people still believe making an income from home is ‘make believe’. And, for one simple reason … they can’t do it!
I personally believe a wonderful work life balance is available to everybody – absolutely everybody.
However! One must first understand and embrace the word COMPROMISE.
Lower your outgoings and find the right industry, and you may just be on your way to earning a perfectly adequate income from home.
Buyer beware! It’s not as glamorous as you may think.
Written by a stay at home mummy who would kill for a few peaceful productive hours in an office – or a phone box. I’m not fussy.

What is a Blobby?
A Blobby is quite simply a Blog driven by hobby. It is a digital feed that has no other purpose than bringing joy and happiness to the ‘Blobber’.
On the other end of the spectre is a Business blog.
I find its a good idea to occassionally sit down with paper and pen to nut out what it is that is driving your blog.
If it’s cold hard cash- your blog is a business.
Here is a quick 1-2-3 to remind you of the intention of your blog.
If you answered yes to two or more of the above, your blog is most certainly a business.
Now be honest, are you treating it like one?
Are you hoping for a business but acting like a blobby?
I was discussing the topic of the word BLOG with a client recently and why it is not always a good idea to label your story or news page as a BLOG.
You see, there are many people out there – potential customers – who still aren’t quite sure about the concept of a BLOG. They’re not convinced looking at a page titled ‘BLOG’ on your website, is worth their time.
This is where good old fashioned titles come into play.
Customers are interested in things that are NEW. If you are lucky, they have hit your website many times before, looking for services or products you provide that interest them. When they come back to your website, time and time again, they want to find NEW things.
The word BLOG doesn’t scream NEW for many people. Yes, even in 2017.
That is why I encourage my clients to title their BLOG pages as ‘NEWS’. People love the word NEWS – because it means they may just read or experience something they haven’t already seen.
If you are trying to increase your post count, perhaps changing the title of your page location is a good start.

This is the moment you realise you have been so caught up blogging for other businesses … you forgot to blog for your own.
I absolutely love writing and I know I am extremely grateful to be getting paid to do it. It’s been a hard slog, but I am glad to say I am one of the lucky few who have made it in the employment stakes.
Being a writer in 2016 is kinda like having a hobby… well that is how most people will see it. It is something people expect you to do on weekends for kicks, not as your day job. Truth is, most people are – or can be – writers these days. It is no longer considered a profession of artists. There are very few literary geniuses bursting off the local bookstore shelf these days.
Tonight I am about to sit down for yet another blog intended for a page that is not my own, and it is about working your passion. The angle – How to turn your passion into profit. It may sound like an easy article to write, it’s not! Turning your passion to profit successfully, is a job not for the faint-hearted. Because when you get down to it, turning your passion into something that is suppose to make you money, automatically places your love on the firing line… and trust me, it will get fired at.
There will be times when you feel your passion is messing with you. And, there will be times when you don’t look at your passion with the eyes of love – it will be more like the eyes of loathe. Ask a passionate parachuter to jump out of a plane 7 days a week as opposed to one weekend a month, and they will soon start to loathe the jump.
The truth is, turning your passion to profit means sacrifice. Yes, you may get the chance to love what you do and hopefully it will afford you more time to do other things – but I guarantee you one thing … you will at one time or another start to look at your passion with different eyes. The sacrifice? Losing the love for what it is you love to do.

I am an employed blogger.
I love saying that, because for many years, I was an unemployed blogger. There were times when 100% of the writing I did was done for love not money. I still write because I love it – I just get paid now.
Aside from the weekly blog posts I create for other businesses and websites, I am also employed by consultancy companies to assist general businesses move towards a digital format. For instance, I am currently working with an Aged Care facility who recently discovered they needed to enter the world wide web or fall to the end of the queue.
Aged Care is an extremely competitive industry and there are a lot of choices these days. The particular facility I now work for has been around 30+ years – it’s not hard to understand why they thought everything would stay ‘business as usual’. The problem they came across, however, is that the family members seeking Aged Care for their loved ones were now going online to do it. With no online presence, numbers will start to dwindle.
I have to say, creating the blog posts and monthly newsletter for this particular industry has been surprisingly fun. I absolutely LOVE it. I never realised that being in Aged Care was pretty on par with going to camp. Everything is done for you, you make really good friends and activities are endless.
I spend 2 days a week with this client developing and publishing their BLOG and Newsletter. It fits in with School Hours and means my little bub can have a nap at Grandmas, located just around the corner from this facility, while I work onsite a few hours. Just another way I am building my career … at home.
It can be done.
So why blog anyway?
When we are talking about revenue, there is only one real reason to blog – you blog to keep people coming back to your website.
Keeping a regular blog ensures your website is active. There is nothing worse than heading over to a company website and not being able to tell if they are actively trading or not.
Your customers will look for signs on your website that tell them you are in fact still trading and therefore easily contactable.
The ONE page websites went off a few years ago. A media company convinced businesses to part with their cash for one simple page – displaying their website and contact details – linked to a domain name. Times change rapidly, especially in the world wide web, and it is no longer acceptable to have a page that shows no signs of life.
So how do you get your website breathing.
Simple! You blog.
Blogging is a form of advertising and self promotion really. It is a very clever way to give your customers more and draw attention to your product or services.

I have recently started creating ONE sheets.
I hear you ask, “What’s a ONE sheet?”
Used originally in poster form as a printed promotional tool for musicians, bands and plays, a ONE sheet is a document now used to promote an individual or a business. Think of it as ONE sheet of paper that tells the reader – in the simplest way possible – who you are and what you do.
ONE sheets are used to replace either a resume document or a cover letter for a job application. A recent survey conducted, asked potential employers what they want to see when they receive a job application, most replied with what it was they didn’t want to see – Employers don’t want to sift through pages of resume looking for your skills and qualifications that match the job being applied for. Employers want ONE document that tells them immediately that you are suitable for the position they are offering.
Also used in business, a ONE sheet will identify, in the simplest form possible, what it is your business does. It’s an advertisement for your business and a tool to be used when networking and approaching new clients.
Here is a ONE sheet I put together recently for a customer. Catherine will be using her ONE Sheet when she applies for roles as a Business Consultant and Project Developer. You see, a person can hold several ONE sheets – especially if they have multiple talents and qualifications. The ONE sheet should be specific for the role being applied for, the same way it is used promoting a business in a specific industry.

Who doesn’t love bubbles? Kids love them at playtime and mumma’s love them in their glass. Bubbles are a ‘good thing’ and identifying the right bubble for you is imperative to mapping out an effective local marketing strategy.
I was discussing map bubbles last night with a local Miranda business. I was explaining how every business needs to identify the location of their bubbles [target audience], from bubble #1 through to #3.
It is a super simple exercise. Basically get a map of your local area and mark your business location with a big red dot. Place a protractor over that dot and create your first circle/bubble by drawing out 2-4klms. This is your first bubble and should be your first point of contact with your marketing.
Depending on what type of business you have, and your marketing budget, look for industries and facilities in the area that see your target audience everyday. Meet with those groups and negotiate a way to expose your services within their business.
Bubbles #2 and #3 follow the same way. Keep your bubbles tight and only increase the radius/klms by 4-5 at a time.

I was asked recently by a friend of mine how she should present her resume when applying for a creative job.
This is something I myself have fought with in the past and definitely made mistakes with.
When presenting your resume to a future employer, I believe you must present your resume in a way that reflects the industry you are hoping to enter into.
I will use my friend as an example…
The industry is makeup artistry. She has many years experience, including work with television stations. My friend has been a full-time solo mum now for a while and is at the time in her mummy years where she must find a more permanent job. Thankfully she has made the decision to pursue employment in an industry she has true passion for.
When you are a ‘creative’ it can be hard to secure employment that taps into your true talents and gifts. Frankly, there really just isn’t a great deal of permanent employment for the arty type. So when you find ‘that job’ advertised, you want to make sure you get your resume right. You want to capture the attention, firstly of the middle man scanning incoming resumes, and then of the big gun who will finally call you in for an interview.
There is one major aspect I want people to understand about applying for creative jobs. Your resume must be ‘visually’ appealing.
Add all the text you want about your quals and experience, what employers want to know first up is, “how good are you as an artist”.
That is why your first priority above anything else is to create a portfolio of your work – that means pictures, photographs, samples.
As most, if not all, job applications are now submitted online, it is extremely easy to create a digital portfolio with a quick link. This quick link could possibly be your quick entry to stage 1 interviews.
There is a plethora of publication building websites [all free] available for you to do just this. it is a simple case of creating a publication, uploading and obtaining your web link for pasting into absolutely every job application you make.
When we build magazines, or any other publication for that matter, we generally use issuu.com – It’s free and super easy. It also has a mobile app for quick access that looks super professional.
I hope this helps my creative friends get closer to their dream job.
